Project Sneak Peak is an exciting opportunity for incoming first-year students to be a part of a once in a lifetime experience, build long lasting friendships, and have fun. Whether you want to splash in your own kayak along the Potomac River, experience the rush of climbing high above the ground, or explore Washington, D.C., and make a difference through service, Sneak Peak has options for everyone! No experience necessary, just a willingness to have fun and be open to new adventures.

Students who attend Project Sneak Peak will:
- Meet and build relationships with other Mason freshmen, faculty, staff, and an upper class Peer Advisor
- Have fun bonding in the great outdoors, rock climbing, kayaking, and/or participating in and helping our larger DC area community
- Discover local treasures including Carder Rock, Harpers Ferry, local non-profit organizations, the DC Metro system, and more
- Develop key leadership skills and participate in a new and exciting experience.
Each group will have 15 freshmen students, one trained trip leader with appropriate certifications who is experienced in either outdoor adventure and camping or community service depending on the trip, a Mason faculty or staff member, and an upper class Peer Adviser.
Always wondered what it feels like to glide on the water in kayak? Already an avid kayaker looking to have fun and meet new people? Eager to learn a new skill and looking for a challenge? On this water adventure, you’ll spend the day in Harpers Ferry with experienced guides, paddling down the river with your group, swimming, and enjoying the beautiful environment. Participants will camp the night before the kayaking trip at a local outdoor campsite and wake up for a fun day on the water. No kayaking or camping experience necessary. Dates: July 11th - July 12th Cost: $100
Off Campus Students ONLY: Living off campus in the fall? Can’t make an overnight trip? We have a day-long kayaking trip at Harpers Ferry for you. Join us for a day of kayaking fun. Enjoy the view from the top on our Sneak Peak Rock Climbing adventure. Whether an experienced climber or looking to try climbing for the first time, our professional climbing instructors will select climbs tailored to your experience and interest. Not only will you get the chance to climb, but you’ll learn to belay your trip mates and tie climbing knots all while enjoying the beautiful Carderock area. Participants will camp the night before at a local outdoor campsite and wake up ready to tackle new heights. No climbing or camping experience necessary. Dates: July 22nd - July 23rd Cost: $100
Urban Expedition & Day of Services
Isn’t the feeling of helping others rewarding? Would you like to better acclimate yourself with Washington DC? Join us in our Urban Expedition and Day of Service; consisting of scavenger hunts, team building activities, community gardening, and sightseeing! The metropolitan area is stunning, and rich with historical information. Our scavenger hunt is bound to show you many beautiful locations, and improve your sightseeing knowledge of the DC mall area. Our nation’s Capitol is filled with various community service opportunities as well, and our Day of Service will be a perfect time to learn about many nonprofit organizations which are just a short metro ride away from George Mason University! This exciting two day, one night trip will allow you to increase your knowledge of the location around you, and is bound to leave you wanting more from the DC area. Dates: July 29th-30th. Cost: $45
Full payment (cost differs per trip, see above for additional information) is due with the Registration Form (see below). Payment may be made via check or credit card on the registration form. Registration fee includes food, transportation, activities, trained instructors, park permits, and group equipment. Students must provide some personal equipment including sleeping bags and sleeping pads. A detailed information packet outlining the program, including an equipment list, will be mailed to you shortly after receiving your registration.
Cancellation: Registration fees are non-refundable. If you are no longer able to attend, please contact the Transition Resource Center at 703-993-9082 to open up another spot for an interested student.
Equipment Needed vs. Provided
The Transition Resource Center will provide tents, cooking equipment, large lanterns, transportation, food, activities, and all programming arrangements and costs.
Students are responsible for bringing all personal equipment: clothing, sleeping bag and pad, dishes, utensils, personal hygiene items, personal lanterns, flashlights, etc. A detailed list of equipment needed will be provided in the information packet sent to students after receipt of registration form and payment
Family, Friends, & Emergencies
Only new freshmen students admitted to Mason and attending summer orientation may attend Project Sneak Peak. However, the participant does not need to attend the orientation immediately before his or her Sneak Peak trip. Family members and friends are not permitted to attend. Students will not be allowed to use cellular devices during the trip. A centralized emergency contact number will be provided to the students and families in the information packet. Trip leaders and faculty will have access to cellular devices for these emergency purposes.
For those attending overnight Sneak Peak trips, housing will not be provided at the end of the second day of the trips. The trips will end at 4pm on the second day and students are responsible for additional accommodations and transportation. An Airport Shuttle to Dulles International Airport (IAD) will be provided. Shuttles will arrive by 4pm on the second day of the trip. Local hotel accommodations can also be found at the Mason Inn, Comfort Inn University Center, Best Western Fairfax, Hampton Inn Fairfax City, and several others. The Mason Shuttle system can be used to access the Washington, DC Metro (http://www.wmata.com/) for transportation to Reagan National Airport, Greyhound, Mega Bus, and Amtrak Station.
